What does working in social media mean? What do I do?

May 5th, 2011

I was glad to be part of the AmmanTT Anniversary Edition, I’m also proud of everyone at Prodigi for the continues support (also Abu Lughod Studios, Mazaj FM & Seagulls Communications). We had one of the most attractive booths at the event, and one of the loudest too. We started with having our Slush machine, and slushsocializing with people the prodigi way (this is how we do it). We also, managed to print 3,200 stickers that ran out like hot cakes, designed by me with the help of Moh’d Zatari, my fellow co-worker. Also, I borrowed Hazem’s LCD and connected it to my Macbook, where people had the chance to play “Angry Birds” and hear the sounds on the smallest, yet most powerful speakers at the expo (we were asked to tone it down a couple of times, yet we were loud enuff’) and the best photographer in town, Ehab.

What came across, is many people not understanding what I do, when I reply to their questions saying: I’m the head of social development, and also try to contribute as a designer. They didn’t get the first part! So, hereby I’m trying to make it easier on everyone by saying a little more about it.

I’m responsible for the business development and expansion of my team, following up & fulfilling communications, monitoring and conversations in the online community space, working across a range of industry sectors and reacting to online conversations in real time to respond to conversations and comments in social media on behalf of those clients who have briefed me to do, specifically when it comes to client liaison and account management, agency pitches, using research tools to undertake social media audits, Identifying the most relevant influencers, advocates and detractors (either individuals or sites/forums/blogs) in a wide range of communities with key social commentators, Delivering real-time insight to account and client teams as required, Devise and write client-facing reports on the level/tone/sentiment of online conversations, Tracking social performance, help the account managers and participate in stimulating online conversations on behalf of our clients, Developing and managing the online presence of some clients on social networks (e.g. YouTube/Facebook/Flickr/Twitter) and on other “owned” media including blogs and personal online diaries, Understanding of SEO principles.

And trust me, this is what I do in brief as a full-time life job, besides managing my own webseries starting this month, my side projects as in Z Plan A, BringRaadHome, my blog (I apologize for the lack of posting recently, but hey.. I’m here). I think the time has come to hire an assistant or a project manager for me to move on with more creations, I decided to let go of my mini start-up “Biwiz” because Prodigi is my bigger dream coming true now, I can say that I have a great business partner which is making me understand more and more of Jordan’s bloody business market with its ups & downs, I think I also gained a couple of extra kilos recently (still under 100kgs thank god!) so here I am trying to find a close-by gym not to waste time and have an excuse of not going to after work, I’m also really happy to work on great clients and pitch for better, and also have the support of many others.

I also apologize for being so random in this blog post, I can’t wait to see all of you in the next events, I also apologize for not contacting many of you recently, as I’m swamped with travelling and doing many things at once, and at this stage of my life I just can’t stop working, since I still have the cliche dream of everyone in the world of achieving my first million dollars before I hit 30 years old. My T-shirts are also being produced by two lovely T-shirt startups in Jordan, the great Jo Bedu and the beautiful Mlabbas – and I’m proud of being Jordanian with all these great efforts.

I also joined StartupJo recently, which is done by my great friend Saeed who even runs a greater project called Sitat Byoot and I hope I can do something better and contribute to the Jordanian startup scene, I’d also love to thank Zamil Safwan from Convo2 for the great help and guidance over the time, and a great person that I thought I was hated by, she knows herself (I hope she’s reading) and Ibrahim Manna from Wheels Express for the madness and happy times.

I’d also like to (I know this is taking forever but I have to let this out of my heart and thank those who I think have a big effect in my life), I’d also like to thank Salwa Qattan and the great people at Bidaya PR, you guys are awesome and you are the real party people. Thanks to everyone at Umniah (Fawzi and Khalil specifically) for the great response, great gift and great service you guys do your best to serve, Thanks to the great team behind Orange for the extreme support and extra ordinary service by your social media entity and great, but super great PR service by Polaris (Abdallah, Ashraf and everyone else…)

When I mentioned all the above, It felt like I was writing my “Thank you before I die” kinda note, but It just feels great to thank those who keep you positive in life, and never stop supporting. I’d love to thank Lara Abdelhadi, Everyone at the Jo Viral team, Starbucks Abdoun for having the best service in town, where I feel home… I’d love to thank Razan, Dana, Omar, Anas, Aseel, KDB and everybody I’ve been contacting the most recently. I’m sorry If I forgot anyone :(

You guys count as family. And, I’ll be back.
