Forced not to eat in Ramadan?

August 8th, 2010

I was checking Botamba (one of my favorite aggregators) this morning and was shocked when I read a post by a blogger who calls herself Snow.

Apparently, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior warned citizens and expats in Kuwait against eating or drinking in public during the holy month of Ramadan, which is normal. Now that catch is that anyone caught ignoring the warning will be fined KD 100 ($347), jailed for a maximum of 1 month or both. WOW!

I’m wondering if this is the “Islam” that some are preaching to implement. This rule doesn’t only defeat the purpose of fasting, It is just controlling people! As far as I know (being taught Islam for years at school), Fasting is supposed to make muslims feel the poor and know what its like for those who are less fortunate and teach muslims patience, how to resist eating or drinking… and also, families and bonding by spending more time together.

What about those in Europe, the US or the rest of the world where such rules aren’t implemented? If a person wants to fast, they should do it regardless of conditions around…

Such things make me hate Ramadan, that I never experienced unfortunately because apparently, Ramadan in our culture is about watching TV series, stuffing yourself on Eftar, working less hours, being totally unproductive, sleeping a lot, changing your biological clock (when you start hanging out at 8pm instead of 5pm for example?).

Is this really Ramadan? the real deal?

  1. Ofcourse this isnot Ramadan. I totally disagree with the rule of no eating or drinking allowed. what if someone is sick, someone is working outside all day, someone who felt tired and decided not to fast! what about those workers who work udner the sun all day and they arent even muslim!! i think it should be a matter of choice. i know its an islamic country, ok dont open the restaurants, but if someone decided to drink some water while they are driving, that shouldnt be a problem!

I totally agree … ramadan is not suppose to be that easy but they make hours shorter and try to make it as relaxing as possible so you end up losing the whole purpose of this month!

Mo, I am appalled as well, since this is also the rule in the UAE. Ramadan is the month of tolerance and people eating in public should only strengthen our resolve to fast instead of whining and complaining about it.

Whoever wants to fast WILL fast regardless and those who want to drink coffee will, either in public or private, Jailing is for criminals.

guys, guys,, what the gov. implement in ramadan (im not a Pro gov. anyway) it sounds Ok. eating is not a crime, nor blowing a car horn.. but given special situations (time or space) it becomes unacceptable. i.e. blowing a horn near a hospital is prohibited!
    anyone got the point?
you all got good thinking minds,, so take care,, really Allah is up there and he KNOWS and SEES all what we say & do…
    Ramadan Kareem
