Once upon a personal post…

October 10th, 2010

Oh Well…

My new job (well, It will be my second month in November) teaches me new things every day. I’m also getting to know new people, mostly from my department… I think a part of us changes when we go through a new experience. It feels like this new job is slowly changing me. I know new people and I’m doing new things at this new place, and it is not an advertising agency.

Which is cool, but different… Anyways, Since I’ve started this new job, most of my new workmates -friends… you name it- love to throw this question at me: What made you decide to join this organization and ditch advertising?… and every single time they ask me that, I don’t quite know how to answer it.

I did not choose this job because I have a great passion for digital design. I like to design but that is not the same as being passionate about designing. I did not choose this job because of the pay…

I chose this job because I want stability and want to be a pioneer at something new. I want to commit to something that does not take the life out of me. I want to learn and gain experience that will be useful elsewhere when the time comes. I chose this job because working as the head of design development in the social media sounds better than saying I am work as an Art Director in an advertising agency. It’s wrong to be elitist like this but I am being flat honest.

-I loved the jobs I did at advertising agencies. I love the people and making friends with some of the clients. I felt what I did made a significant contribution to the agencies. But when people I know see me working behind the desk at the agency, I feel a twinge of awkwardness. It should not bother me but it does nonetheless.-

Of course, this is not the answer I give them. My answer is usually about something I’m interested in doing and liking the hours… but for me, it feels like the wrong answer any way I say it.
