Digital Protesters: Leave #Jordan alone
February 16th, 2011
I’m shocked by the amount of those tweeting and writing things such as “we hope you have your freedom Jordan like Egypt and Tunisia”. What even made me mad is that most of those doing this are either not Jordanian, never visited Jordan, can’t locate Jordan on the world map or can’t speak for their own country’s freedom… that’s if they had one.

I’m a proud Jordanian, I love my country, I am satisfied with his majesty King Abdulla II and her majesty Queen Rania great efforts. We don’t have oil/petrol like other Arab countries do, neither water, we have a dead sea and a dry river, yet we don’t suffer from power outage and we are able to shower everyday. Look at countries like Lebanon, with their great share of tourism yet power outage. We have decent internet, unlike many other countries surrounding us, the majority can afford to eat, and live under a roof, we have public schools, we have initiatives like Madrasati, yet some people start hash-tags like #AngryJordan on twitter.
Those who are ungrateful bashing the king, the queen and the country are some “Jordanians” that I prefer not even calling people because being able to tweet and blog under fake names and aliases behind screens and calling themselves people is just not right. I’d rather call them cockroaches because they aren’t just promoting all sorts of hatred towards Jordan on the internet, but they count as human beings on earth which is unfair. I understand Jordan doesn’t happen to be the best place to live on earth, we pay taxes, we don’t have many things other countries do… I mean I understand many things but it is not like his majesty is not working on improving the living conditions in our kingdom. Everyone wants to graduate from university and work as a manager, unfortunately we are not a rich state like the Arabian gulf countries or so to hire lower class citizens from other countries with worse quality of life to boss around more often. This is what we have, this is what we are, and this is what we should stick to.
People should be more than grateful for what they have. Thank god for the healthy life they’re living and love their own countries.

I agree, we don’t need to change the monarchy, what we need or reform not change actually. So, I would say it’s good to have people speak their minds but not people who just want to rant and scream and recreate what happened in Egypt or Tunisia in Jordan because that would be stupid. So I think we need rational calls upon the government for reform, not eager beavers and zealotry

Great article Moey.
My response is here – http://3arabiyah.com/post/3339153227/thats-not-the-point
Focusing on just the way you’re living and not the politics of your country as a whole takes away from where we should be focusing our energy.
Yes you are thanking god becuase YOU have access to internet and clothes and water and live under a roof. While THIRTY PERCENT and unemployed, we have HUGE corruption scandals that can afford to feed the whole population, we have 14% inflation rate and 24% are considered POOR.
Trust me, not everyone, and certainly not the majority, are happy. Go outside the Amman bubble drive a few hours out of Amman and see what those people living style is like.
I’m sorry to say but what I read lacks true citizenship understanding.
Issue is not about bashing the King or Queen (which I have high regards for and believe the monarchy is the only option for us) or being grateful and shutting up, it’s about the need to change and reform TOP-DOWN. Changing the PM and ministers as escape goats while being very passive towards issues like corruption will only hurt the country in the long run and create a serious sense of despair when most citizens believe the big guys will never be prosecuted. A true citizen needs to push for reform and ask questions without being harassed. A true citizen should demand freedom of speech, public activism and protest without being threatened and recalled to the Intelligence dept. etc. A true citizen demands the Gov to work him and not for themselves. Have you asked you’re self this question.. Why do 95% of Jordanians fail to present their true income tax forms? Answer is: Because they don’t trust the authoritarian Government they have.
Did you know that that corruption amounts to couple hundred million JDs per year in Jordan? To make it simple; this amount is stolen away fm potential development project in the south of Jordan; Tafeleh, ma’an, karak, even the Ghor area where sickness, uneducation and under development is a daily life there? In some parts unemployment is close to 45%!
In order to have reform we need to be honest with ourselves first and one another. We need to get off our high horses, stop with our double standards and start becoming true citizen for one reason only, because we love our country and want to protect it from disasters looming ahead.
