Why I ditched the iPhone for a “Nokia”

Posted: December 22nd, 2008 | Author: Moey | Filed under: Amman, Jordan, Apple+Mac | Tags: | 17 Comments »

Let me start, I’m a loyal mac user, I own many iPods (4 or 5 in my life), an iMac, a MacBook and owned an iPhone 1.0.2 previously.

I do not think that the iPhone 3G is worth 369 JD (specially when you’re stuck for a year contract of 20 JD/month minimum and a 15 JD deposit). I fell for a Nokia for the first time in my life (everyone knows how anti-Nokia I can get).

The new Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is just… amazing!! Not only that, I also got it for 255 JD. Let me just compare both phones, okay?

  1. Memory: iPhone has either 8 GB or 18 GB and can’t be modified, 5800 has an internal memory of 81MB and an externa microSD of 8 GB (and can be upgraded).
  2. Typing: iPhone has a mini QWERTY keyboard while 5800 has Handwriting, Mini QWERTY Keyboard, landscape full-screen QWERTY and alphanumeric keypad.
  3. Price: iPhone is for 299 JD (8 GB) and 369 JD (16 GB) excluding taxes and contract (for a year at least) or you’ll have to pay a year upfront of 20 JD/month, Also Ahmad discovered that the plans do not allow you to use the iPhone’s data connection on a PC. While the 5800 has a fixed price around the kingdom for 255 JD and no strings attached.

And more… check here.

by the way, with the orange iphone, i believe you also have to pay 45JDs transfer fee to get your number on that phone, otherwise you get a new line.

Seems pretty good, I have the previous express music and I really like it too although it is not as good as this one.

I am planning to buy the new version soon, but don’t you feel that it is a bit slow and the screen isn’t bright enough?

Although most of the stuff Apple releases have weird functions and missing capabilities that Nokia usually always pays attention to, there’s nothing like an Apple product Moey, you should know that =P. Congrats on the phone, tehree bil hana, hehe. :)

    True Nas, you have to.

Nizar, it is fast and the screen is medium for me, too bright still.

Shadz, I know… I had an iPhone before, still this one is not impressing me much, I’m dying for the new mice and macbooks.

Congrats, I guess :-) I added a few more reasons why someone should get a Nokia instead of iPhone. I am not giving up my iPhone 3G for the Nokia but I’ll keep the Nokia around too.

But what does it mean “the plans do not allow you to use the iPhone’s data connection on a PC.”? You mean tethering? That’s not allowed/supported anywhere in the world with Mac or PC, I though.

I just found the phone of my dreams! Merci beaucoup Moey! Do you know if it has been released in Kuwait? If so, how much? (You’re the dude with connections..and I don’t want to go around mobile shops to ask, lol.)

Interesting comparisons. Well said. Nokia N95 8GB really wins me over! cell phone accessories Motorola keypads and Samsung covers
But I have to say something about iPhone. I think when iPhone was created, it aims to change the way 3G technology is done. Therefore it doesn’t include 3G because it uses another technology to replace it. So I think you can’t really claim it doesn’t have 3G features. It is in a different form.
