Kuwait blocks YouTube

Posted: September 22nd, 2008 | Author: Moey | Filed under: Kuwait | Tags: , | 15 Comments »

KUWAIT: The Ministry of Communication has issued a memo to all internet service providers in Kuwait asking them to block YouTube access. The popular video website came under fire from the ministry due to content considered offensive to Muslims, a source within the industry told Kuwait Times. The Ministry pointed to content including a video of a man signing verses from the Holy Quran while playing the oud and another video showing caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

Not a nice thing to read in the morning, Why block the website? I’m not sure if any of you remember, they blocked anything +18 in Yahoo groups 2 years back, and YouTube has an option that allows users to report offensive content.

Please don’t go nuts like Syria and block YouTube and Facebook?

I would love to hear them try to explain when the ostrich syndrome (sticking one’s head in the sand to avoid “danger”) has ever been effective.

I will never move to an Arabic country at this rate ever! I live off YouTube. How you think I watch all the mosalsalat whenever I want without being constrained to a TV schedule?

Lovely thought: In Dubai everything is BLOCKED, unless you drive a super car, live in a penthouse in Media City then the world of communication is yours.

The Gulf Web censorship is very selective and judgemental.

1- Proxy servers and applications are AMAZINGLY easy to obtain and use … So blocking is just another way of telling the nation that “WE ARE SO FRIGGIN STUPID AND WE KNOW IT”

2- From my own experience on YouTube and what i have seen, Original Gulf people ABUSE YouTube:
a- upload shameful disgusting horrible videos that reflects nothing but stupidity and shallowness.
b- Their Comments are alwasy the worst! they include bad words, swearing, racist notions and non-sense.

I am neutral on this issue.
Unless Computer and Internet goes on School Subjects of HOW TO FULL UTILISE THE USE OF INTERNET IN BENEFECIAL WAY, i say Friggin block it for these mindless nations! It is better, we r gonna have a cleaner YouTube anyway.
And i am with the freedom of communication, if done properly.

Again, everyday, i lose faith more quickly in the sanity of living in such an area.

Dictatorships, Stupidity, Poverty, Illetracy, Religious Taboos ..etc

    WHAT THE HELL?
