Amman logoless

As widely reported 2 years ago, the Brazilian city of Sao Paolo passed a law banning all outdoor advertising. The law came into effect earlier last year, all of the ads were dismantled and taken down. Now Tony de Marco, a local flickr user, has put together a cool photoset documenting the strangely barren adscape. It’s kind of haunting, like an advertising zombie movie. Is the ban progress? Or does it remove some of the character of the city? I’m not sure.

I was thinking about this getting implemented in Amman, you may ask why? let me answer your question… maybe because the whole nation got sick of the networks/telecommunications ads all over town. Telecommunications providers are in mobile/cellular networks ads are everywhere. everywhere, imagine waking up one day just to find them gone, just like what GAM did with the ugly signs causing visually blindness.

It’s clear our industry (as in advertising) has gone a bit mental sticking ads on every surface we can find. And we could use a few wake-up calls. But the answer is surely not an outright ban - it never is, regardless of whether we’re talking books, films, or what have you. Hopefully instead the industry will smarten up and realize that finding ever newer and bigger ways to interrupt people isn’t the answer. Being interesting and useful is.

I hope they (cellular networks) just provide 3.5G service or at least the other 3 networks beside Uminah release WiMAX services, I mean we deserve better… we are sick of those, call cheaper ads… we want video calls, we want better services like services in Bahrain or Kuwait.

Although allegiant airlines are really classy, the experience of flying with hawaiian airlines is unforgettable. The midwest airlines is also working to make its experience worth reliving. The emirates airlines on the other hand concentrate only on improving the quality of their services.

I actually enjoy ads, in any media. I don’t work as a designer, I design as a hobby, but since I was little my mom used to shut me up with a VHS of recorded ads from the TV. Sometimes I buy the newspaper to check the creative ads in it. If this was banned, I know I won’t die, but I will be certainly bored to a weird extent.

So you guys don’t have 3G networks in Jordan?

3.5 Moe. we have but It is not activated or something! and I love advertising, I mean I work in it for god’s sake but not when 99% of the ads around you are about a certain service.

WTF! Lol, so they have the technology but they don’t actually use it?
Cuz in Egypt, they made a big… no wait… HUGE fuss about 3G networks!
Etisalat has the first 3.75G network in the ME, Vodafone has a 3.5G network, and Mobinil are building one, and you can’t imagine the amount of advertising and publicity made by those companies!
