Review: Caramel سكر بنات

I had the chance to see the movie last Tuesday, I have to say that I was impressed (again) by the power of Nadine Labaki, whether it was the quality of the movie, the stories, the scenario, the acting, the comedy/drama smooth transitions, the cinematographthey, the script, the intro itself is a “WOW, how nice!” type of one.
If you’re Lebanese or just an Arab who appreciates good cinema, memorable and professional, stop reading and go see the movie now at Grand Cinema! You’ll have the opportunity to see the world from a different perspective, a Lebanese woman’s perspective.
The movie story is just complicated and simple at the same time, focusing on sisterhood, pressing social issues, love, homosexuality, adultery, religious customs, and aging explored in an unbiased way. with all of the hidden emotions, that will make you have different feelings at the same time. from smiling to crying.
Any woman would be able to see herself in at LEAST one of the characters in this film. You will also leave with a very good impression after viewing Caramel, something the Lebanese cinematography has been missing for a long time, Thank god it is coming back with movies like “West Beyrouth”, “Zozo” and now Caramel.
Congratulations to Nadine Labaki and the team behind the movie! I will be waiting for Nadine’s next wonder!
Extended info: Caramel is a Lebanese film, produced in 2007, the first feature film by the Lebanese director Nadine Labaki. The film has premiered during the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, in the Directors’ Fortnight section. The film ran for the Caméra d’or during the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. In Caramel, Nadine refers to an epilation method used in the middle east that consists of heating sugar, water and lemon juice. She tries as well to refer to the “idea of sweet and salt, sweet and sour”. Where most of the women in the middle east used to remove their unwanted body hair with.

Awartany, thanks!
Am glad to know you liked it, I was worried that it might be another silly movie to add to our long list.. I have asked if anybody seen it back in September but it wasn’t out yet in the Middle East.. I don’t think it will be shown in the U.S. anytime soon..
Finally, the Lebanese have done something right and nice that we can be proud of for a change
Thanks for the review..
I went and watched yesterday, very nice one, and as an arabic woman, in my twenties, i relate to many issues raised, the way they were raised. though My sister; a high school student, could not relate to some of the issues under focuse.
I loved, and i went because i loved el bos6a movie last summer, nice one indeed.
Oh My god the trailer is amazing, i cant wait till i get my hands

I LOVED it. Nadina is just amazing in so many levels! This movie is one of the best Arabic movies I have ever scene. Although it presented some women social issues. She did an excellent job in the artistic past. She is a great artist. She reminded me of the beauty of details. She makes life beautiful as she is. Love her.
Nice material , and it is strange where its nice to know that you and interested with the Lebanese movies.
For sure Nadine is a creative woman according to the distributed samples been seen in TV. No doubt she will make a creative idea because she been given a long time to show her talent .

I saw Caramel when it was out already.I give it 4.5/5 stars.I think the movie was GREAT!
Very lebanese and very realistic,i love it,nadine nailed it.Wonderful and beautifully made,i applaud her!
i love LILI!!!!!!!!
<3
will, i know its pretty damn late. still, i’ve just watched it a couple of days ago
movies must be about something, thats a wrong rule. the most acting i adore is sienfeld. still, it gets lost (kinda) when a show about nothing talks about everything in 2 hours
acting and directing was not the problem. the story is pretty lame and weak. it actually felt in the same mistakes the producers of “keef el hal?” did: talk about all the taboos in 1:30 hours.
it was fun, the two old women story had my attention and couldn’t care less about the four girls.
i’d give it 2.5/5. will watch it again only if i was forced to. “Bosta” remains the best lebanese movie ever
