11 things to do before you hit the Publish button

As a blogger, you write a lot of posts and sometimes, you forget the most important. here’s a checklist to help you out:

  1. Read twice. If you think you can write something better, do it. Seems you’ve messed up? Write later. Cut short the unwanted.
  2. Spell Check.
  3. Double check to see if the links on your post are working. It’s really bad if a reader sees a 404 page when he clicks on a link that’s necessary to understand your article better.
  4. If you have included images, ask yourself if the image is really needed for the post. If not, remove it. If you haven’t added any pictures, ask again to yourself if the post needs any.
  5. Make sure you have put the ALT and TITLE tags in images into good use.
  6. Check whether you’ve tagged/categorized the post. Ask yourself whether the selected category is the most suitable one for the post.
  7. Writing your opinion on a news piece? Don’t forget to mention the source, if any.
  8. Another tip: Link to an old post of yours if it’s relevant to your current post. Many bloggers don’t do this, but deep linking to your own posts is good for your blog.
  9. Sleep on (some of) your posts. I have often done this to keep myself from making bad choices in publishing some items.
  10. This is more for after I post something. I strongly believe that edits are a necessity and should not be avoided. If I make changes to a post after it has been published, I mark my posts to display the changes clearly. It makes the message clearer and adds continuity to the “story”.
  11. Formatting and WYSIWYG are nice but it is also quite easy to go overboard. Make sure you are helping your reader understand your point of view and not vice versa. Remove unneeded formatting. Make sure your formatting is not breaking the structure of the blog. In addition, if your feed is easier to read than your main blog, you might want to take a closer look at your design.

    Good list!
I think one big mistake which many bloggers make is that they add too many “widgets”/apps on the main page which really increase the time it takes for a page to load.. A couple of months ago, I lost a lot of my visitors that way.
