As for the ban on Western hairstyles: you have to be acquainted with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_(Plato)" title="Plato's Republic at Wikipedia" rel="nofollow">Plato's Republic</a> to understand Iran's political system. Just replace "philosophers" with ulama and you'll get a clear picture of what mentality goes behind Iranian policies, and where the country is heading. To sum it up: the ulama know what's best for the people, and they should maintain a culture that promotes Islamic values. Therefore, the goverment gets to decide what is permitted, what is forbidden and what is compulsory for the people to become "Islamic." I actually came across your blog because I googled for info on Virgin Megastore shutting down in Kuwait... so I'm going to that post now to comment...
