Mobile Networks In The Arab World Launching HSDPA

Wataniya Telecom is launching HSDPA Cards for Laptops in Kuwait, which will reach speeds of 1.8mbps for the Internet service for 14 kd/month. A Necessary Wireless Card (125 Kd) will be needed and the service will be in specific areas only. The new technology called HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) is a part of the new 3.5G mobile phone technology. Although it has a theoretic speed of 1.8 mbps don’t expect to get to a speed higher than 500-700 kbps as an average (this according to the people who are using this service in Germany and Italy). Initial download speeds were announced to be 1.8Mbps, rising to 3.6Mbps in 2007, 7.2Mbps in 2008, 10Mbps in 2009 and 20Mbps by 2011. MTC Vodafone had started providing this service in Bahrain last May (so It makes Bahrain the first country in the region), and later on Wataniya will start providing this service next month in Kuwait (so It’ll will be the second country in the region and one of the few in the world to have this service). Wataniya started promoting this service in their press conferences back in December 2005, the theoretic upload speed will be 384Kb/sec (practically about 200 kbps).
